This Year’s Theme: Courage to Lead
“You develop courage by doing things, small things, but things that cost you some exertion – mental and, I suppose, spiritual exertion.”
– Maya Angelou
Women make up roughly 61 percent of the labor market worldwide, attaining college-level degrees at a faster rate than their male counterparts. Yet women only account for single digit percentages of top leadership positions across all fields and industries.
We know this: women make great leaders, women are good listeners; naturally perceptive, highly compassionate and wonderful bridge-builders.
So why are they still underrepresented?
There is something missing.
The growing awareness of the contribution women bring to their employer’s bottom line and to the broader economy has triggered a shift in focus among policy makers, industry and community leaders alike.
This is good news for women.
But on its own, it’s insufficient to ensure that women who contribute their full quota of value are fully rewarded for it. It must be coupled with a shift in female mindset.
Women should aspire to do more, be more, lead more and act upon this without self-doubting whether they can.
Women may be powerful, they may be confident, but without the Courage to exercise power and confidence they are still limited.
It takes Courage to act on convictions, it takes Courage to stand up for other women, it takes Courage to question the beliefs that have guided women’s choices and limited their horizons.
It takes Courage to challenge the status quo in the world, and become more, not less.
Courage is not innate, but developed. One act of courage is a drop in the bucket towards change.
